Iran Launches Omid Satellite Into Orbit

Iran launched its first satellite into orbit Monday using a modified homemade long-range missile, thrusting the Islamic republic into an elite club of space-faring nations, state media reported.
The small Omid communications satellite was launched Monday evening aboard a Safir 2 rocket, the Fars news agency reported.
Two objects from the launch, likely the Omid satellite and part of its booster, are circling Earth in oval-shaped orbits.
The orbits range in altitude from low points of 153 miles to high points of 235 miles and 273 miles. The orbital inclination is 55.5 degrees, according to U.S. military tracking data.
Iran joins a small group of countries with the ability to build and launch their own satellites into orbit.
The former Soviet Union launched the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, in October 1957. The United States followed with the successful launch of Explorer 1 in January 1958.
France, Japan, China, the United Kingdom, India and Israel later developed and successfully flew their own space launchers.
Iran is the first new space-faring nation since Israel joined the club in 1988.
The launch was timed to occur during a 10-day celebration of the 30th anniversary of Iran's Islamic revolution, according to the Fars news agency.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ordered Monday's launch and said the satellite was a "step toward justice and peace," according to state television reports.
Iran constructed Omid and planned the launch under strict U.N. economic sanctions due to international suspicions of Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The sanctions affect the international trade of goods that could be used on military projects, including programs related to satellite and rocket development.
Iran orbited its first satellite in 2005 on a Russian rocket, but Monday's launch was the country's first to use a homemade rocket launched from Iranian territory.
Omid, which means hope in Persian, carries experimental control systems, communications equipment, and a small remote sensing payload, Iranian news reports said.
Previous versions of the Safir rocket have completed several suborbital tests, including a mysterious flight last August that some believe may have been a failed satellite launch attempt.
Iranian news reports in August reported the Safir had successfully reached orbit, but Western intelligence officials said the rocket suffered a dramatic failure during the launch.
Iran plans several more satellites over the next few years to bolster disaster management programs and strengthen communications networks inside the country.

Wed, 04 Feb 2009

Omid satellite orbits earth 23 times
Iran's first domestically-built research satellite has successfully orbited the earth 23 times since it was lofted into space.

On Tuesday, Iran placed its Omid (meaning Hope in Persian) satellite into orbit via the Iranian-produced satellite carrier Safir 2, ushering in an era of independence in its space program in commemoration of the Islamic Revolution's 30th anniversary.

Equipped with two frequency bands and eight antennae, Omid has an elliptical orbit with a minimum of 250 kilometers and a maximum of 400.

"During the orbit of the Omid satellite, it passed over Iran three times and was sighted by ground stations. Information was exchanged," Iranian aerospace official Alireza Zarifian Yeganeh reported Wednesday in letter, a copy of which was obtained by Press TV.

The lightweight telecommunications satellite is equipped with remote sensing, satellite telemetry and geographic information system technology as well as remote and ground station data processing.

Omid is a research satellite that has been designed for gathering information and testing equipment. After orbiting for one to three months, Omid will return to earth with data that will help Iranian experts send an operational satellite into space.

Omid is the third Iranian-made satellite to be sent into space. Russia launched Iran's first satellite in 2005. Three years later, another satellite, which had been jointly designed by Iran, China and Thailand, was also sent into orbit.

To date, only eight countries have launched domestically-made satellites into orbit. Tehran also plans to send its first astronaut into space by 2021.

The Iranian aerospace achievement comes as the country has been subject to sanctions for nearly 30 years. The sanctions have cut Iran's access to many goods, including spare parts for passenger planes and even various medicines.

Tuesday, 3 February 2009
Iran launches homegrown satellite

Iran says it has launched its first domestically made satellite into orbit.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the launch had been successful and that with it Iran had "officially achieved a presence in space".

The satellite, carried on a Safir-2 rocket, was meant for telecommunication and research purposes, state TV said.

A US state department official said the launch was of "great concern" and could lead to ballistic missile development. Iran insists its intent is peaceful.

France has also expressed concern, saying the technology used was "very similar" to that used in ballistic missiles.

Iran is subject to United Nations sanctions because some Western powers think it is trying to build a nuclear bomb.

Tehran denies that claim and says its nuclear ambitions are limited to the production of energy.

Revolution anniversary

Officials from six world powers - the US, Russia, China, UK, France and Germany - are due to meet in Germany on Wednesday to discuss the nuclear stand-off.

The launch of the Omid (Hope) satellite had been expected and was clearly timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Iranian revolution, says the BBC's Jon Leyne in Tehran.

Mr Ahmadinejad said the satellite was launched to spread "monotheism, peace and justice" in the world.

But the launch could cause alarm in the West because of fears the technology could be used to make a long-range missile, possibly with a nuclear warhead, our correspondent says.

Iran will no doubt reply that it is once again being judged by double standards for using a technology that is commonplace in many other parts of the world, he adds.

Speaking after the launch, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki stressed the project was peaceful.

"Iran's satellite technology is for purely peaceful purposes and to meet the needs of the country," Mr Mottaki said, on the fringes of an African Union summit in Ethiopia.

US state department official Robert Wood said Iran's activities could "possibly lead to the development of ballistic missiles" and were of "great concern".

French foreign ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier said France was "very concerned" about the launch.

"We can't help but link this to the very serious concerns about the development of military nuclear capability," he said.

UK Foreign Office minister Bill Rammell said the launch underlined the UK's "serious concerns about Iran's intentions".

"There are dual applications for satellite launching technology in Iran's ballistic missile programme," he said in a statement.

"As a result, we think this sends the wrong signal to the international community, which has already passed five successive UN Security Council resolutions on Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programme."

John Pike, an expert at the US-based think-tank GlobalSecurity.org, confirmed to the BBC that the launch had been a success and the satellite was now established in a low Earth orbit.

At that altitude it is likely to remain in orbit for some two months before falling back towards Earth and burning up as it re-enters the atmosphere, he told the BBC.

Last August, Iran said it had successfully launched a rocket capable of carrying its first domestically built satellite, having in February launched a low-orbit research rocket as part of preparations for the satellite launch.

That launch marked the inauguration of a new space centre, at an unidentified desert location, which included an underground control station and satellite launch pad.

The White House called the 2008 launch "unfortunate", warning it would further isolate Iran from the global community.

In February 2007, Iran said it had launched a rocket capable of reaching space - before it made a parachute-assisted descent to Earth.

In October 2005, a Russian rocket launched Iran's first satellite, the Sina-1, which carried photographic and telecommunications equipment.

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iran Tuesday successfully launched its first satellite into orbit, a step hailed by Iran's president as a "source of pride" for the Islamic republic, according to state-run news outlets.
U.S. Department of Defense officials confirmed the launch, and the State Department expressed "grave concern."

"Developing a space launch vehicle that could ... put a satellite into orbit could possibly lead to development of a ballistic missile system," State Department acting spokesman Robert Wood told reporters. "So that's of grave concern to us."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to discuss Iran in meetings Tuesday with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

On Wednesday officials from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China will meet in Germany to discuss next steps on Iran. Wood said that Undersecretary William Burns, who is representing the United States, will seek input and discuss some ideas the Obama administration has about how to move forward.
Two U.S. officials confirmed that Iran had launched a low-earth orbit satellite, CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr said.

There were no indications of any weapons activity on the two-stage rocket, although the rocket is capable of launching long-range weapons, the officials said.

"I wouldn't think of this in terms of highly advanced technology," one U.S. official said. But it does suggest Iran's two-stage rockets are increasingly reliable.

The Pentagon said Tuesday the launch is "clearly a concern of ours."

"Although this appears to be satellite, there are dual-use capabilities that could be applied to missiles, and that's a concern to us and everybody in region," Department of Defense spokesman Geoff Morrell said.

The launch of the satellite Omid -- which means "Hope" in Farsi -- was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Islamic revolution in Iran, according to Iranian media reports.

Iran said the satellite had already completed its first mission -- to transmit a message from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who spoke at the launching ceremony Monday night.

In his message, Ahmadinejad congratulated the nation and said the successful launch improves Iran's status in the world, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

He stressed that both the satellite and the Safir rocket used to launch it were made entirely by Iranian technicians.

Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said that despite the small size of the Omid satellite, it will open the way for an Iranian space program. He said Tehran plans to launch another satellite in the future.

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has successfully sent its first domestically made satellite into orbit, the country's president announced Tuesday, claiming a significant step in an ambitious space program that has worried many international observers.

The satellite, called Omid, or "hope" in Farsi, was launched late Monday after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave the order to proceed, according to a report on state radio.

State television showed footage of what it said was the nighttime liftoff of the rocket carrying the satellite at an unidentified location in Iran.

The reports were not immediately verified by outside observers. Some Western observers have accused Tehran of exaggerating the capabilities of its space program.

Iran has long held the goal of developing a space program, generating unease among world leaders already concerned about its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

One of the worries associated with Iran's fledgling space program is that the same technology used to put satellites into space can also be used to deliver warheads.

The United States and some of its allies suspect Iran is pursuing a covert nuclear program. Iran denies the charge, saying its atomic work is only for peaceful purposes such as power generation.

Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that the satellite, which he said had telecommunications capabilities, had reached its orbit and had made contact with ground stations, though not all of its functions were active yet.

The launch was intended to be a message of peace and friendship to the world, Ahmadinejad told state television. "We need science for friendship, brotherhood and justice," he said.

The announcement of the Omid's launch came as officials from the U.S., Russia, Britain, France, Germany and China were set to meet Wednesday near Frankfurt to talk about Iran's nuclear program.

The group has offered Iran a package of incentives if it suspends uranium enrichment and enters into talks on its nuclear program. The U.N. Security Council has imposed sanctions to pressure Iran to comply.

Iranian television said the satellite would orbit at an altitude of between 155 and 250 miles. It was taken into orbit by a Safir-2, or ambassador-2, rocket, which was first tested in August and has a range of 155 miles.

The radio report said the satellite is designed to circle the earth 15 times during a 24-hour period and send reports to the space center in Iran. It has two frequency bands and eight antennas for transmitting data.

Ahmadinejad said Iran has achieved the ability to launch satellites into orbit and would now seek to increase the ability of its satellite-carrier rockets to carry more weight.

Despite the anxiety by the U.S. and its allies over Iran's space program, it is not exactly clear how developed it is.

In 2005, Iran launched its first commercial satellite on a Russian rocket in a joint project with Moscow, which appears to be the main partner in transferring space technology to Iran.

Also in 2005, the government said it had allocated $500 million for space projects in the next five years.

Iranian officials first started developing the satellite, which weighs 60 pounds, in 2006.

Iran has said it wants to put its own satellites into orbit to monitor natural disasters in the earthquake-prone nation and improve its telecommunications.

Iranian officials also point to America's use of satellites to monitor Afghanistan and Iraq and say they need similar abilities for their security.

Iran hopes to launch three more satellites by 2010, the government has said.
